Ella's Scoop: The Wales Kids, From Christenings to Boarding School

By Ella Hughes · October 1, 2026

Hello, Upper East Siders and Windsor watchers. It's Ella, and this week's scoop comes with a lot of tiny christening gowns and one very big milestone.

InStyle has put together a photo retrospective of Prince William and Kate Middleton's three children, tracing Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis from their christenings through early public appearances and school days, and now into boarding school. The royal nursery has officially emptied out a bit, and I'm feeling sentimental. Don't worry, I'll recover by lunch.

The Cast, For the Record

Let's set the scene, per InStyle. Prince George, second in line to the British throne, was born on July 22, 2013. Princess Charlotte arrived on May 2, 2015. Prince Louis made his entrance on April 23, 2018.

Three kids, three christenings, and one very well-documented childhood. The retrospective's photo run goes from those christenings to early public appearances, first days of school, family moments, official portraits, recent public events, and finally boarding school for each of them.

The Arc: Christening to Classroom

The structure of the retrospective tells its own story. Every child gets the same sequence of milestones: christening, early outings, starting school, boarding school. It's a neat bit of royal symmetry, and I suspect that's the point. The Wales siblings have grown up on a kind of public schedule, with each big moment arriving on cue and a camera waiting nearby.

Here's my take, and it is only that: the sameness is the appeal. We don't follow these three because anything scandalous happens in a christening photo. We follow them because we've watched them age in fixed intervals, like a flip book with better tailoring.

The Christenings

The retrospective opens with all three christenings, which is where every royal childhood officially begins on the public record. They're the baseline for the then-versus-now comparison that makes a gallery like this irresistible. Nobody in a christening photo knows what's coming. The adults, of course, know exactly where the cameras are.

The Early Appearances

Next come the early public appearances for George, Charlotte and Louis. I can't tell you what was worn or who waved at whom, because the details aren't in what I have in hand, and I don't make things up. I leave that to the anonymous blogs. What I can say is that the gallery treats these as a distinct chapter, separate from the school years that follow.

The School Days

Then comes starting school, a milestone the retrospective gives each child. After that, boarding school, the chapter that gives this gallery its timeliness. InStyle frames the children's move to boarding school as the latest step in a childhood the public has followed closely. The royal family remains a source of public fascination, and the next generation's growth milestones keep that interest humming.

Why the Boarding School Chapter Hits Different

It's one thing to watch a toddler at a public event. It's another to watch a gallery reach the point where the kids are heading off to school away from home. The photos can only show so much. After that, the story gets quieter.

That's my read, anyway. The gallery also includes family moments and official portraits, which tells me the editors wanted more than a milestone checklist. They wanted the sense that these kids have a life between the headlines, even if the public mostly sees the highlight reel.

What I'm Not Telling You

A good gossip girl knows when to stay quiet. The details behind the schools, the daily routines and the parents' feelings about the whole thing aren't part of what I've got, so I won't pretend otherwise. If someone claims to know what it's like in a dorm room in Berkshire, ask for a source. I'd want one.

The Last Word

The Wales children were introduced to us in christening gowns and are now moving into a chapter with far fewer photographers invited. The public got a decade of milestones. The kids, one hopes, are about to get a little more privacy.

You know you love them. XOXO, Ella.
